U-pick strawberries this afternoon starting a@ 2 PM(Wednesday June 12)
We plan to open the strawberry patches for u-pick this afternoon (June 12, 2014) starting at 2 pm. This is the third picking for this year. Picking conditions will be fairly good. I see red berries everywhere as I walked the patches this morning. Strawberry flowers come in clusters. The first flower to open is called the king flower and it makes the biggest berry. A few days later the next few flowers of the cluster open. The berries from those flowers are a bit smaller. This repeats till all the flowers have bloomed and is the primary reason that the berries early in the season are large and the size of the berries “runs down” throughout the season. If you want big berries this is the best time. I expect peak season to be from this Saturday through next week. Strawberry season is usually about three weeks long overall. Enjoy this lovely day.
